Our History

The Halls

Generations ago, when Buckhorn was deep in the wilds, every winter a Scottish gentleman would construct a fish hut on the ice in the bay. The structure measured six feet by six feet and was left standing to be taken out with the ice each spring. Across the lake, the native community at Curve Lake would observe this annual ritual and dub it Six Foot Bay.

After coming home from World War 1, Leslie Hall attained trapping rights to the shoreline surrounding Six Foot Bay. The trapping and selling of muskrat skins enabled Leslie to purchase a massive quantity of land, including the shoreline along the Six Foot Bay area.

When Leslie and Nettie Hall began hosting American fishermen in 1949, they decided to keep the name. Years later, they decided to parcel off some of their property to gain funds to build cottages. The waterfront lots sold for $1,000.00 apiece.

Leslie and Nettie's son, Garry, started to run the business during the 1970s, and the growth of the resort took hold. The small fishing resort now boasts 16, 3-bedroom waterfront cottages, 70 seasonal trailer sites, and many transient campsites.

Garry undertook the construction of the man-made inland lake, which continues to be a focal part of the resort, offering beautiful views to the restaurant guests, seasonal homeowners, and golfers on the 18th green.

In the late 1970s, Garry recognized the potential of the surrounding countryside. He and his wife, Susan, embarked on the ambitious project of constructing a golf course.

The endeavour was gruelling, as sturdy pines and less-than-desirable soil comprised most of the land slotted for the 9-hole layout. Massive boulders were painstakingly removed, and each tree was fallen by hand with an axe, leaving no stumps behind.

Golf Course opened for business.

In 1981, Six Foot Bay Golf Course opened for business. The opening of the Restaurant/ProShop soon followed. The golf course expanded to 18 holes, with many changes, by the late 80’s.

In the 1990’s, Garry’s children, Garry Jr., and Melissa joined the family business. Over the decades, there have been many changes and upgrades. In keeping with the Hall Family’s tradition for over 75 years, it is our pleasure to provide a uniquely beautiful vacation destination for families and friends.

We welcome and thank you for choosing Six Foot Bay Resort and Golf!
